No, I am not going to mention Timeline. We shall not speak of it here.
Rather than moan about something we will just have to loathe until it’s changed in 6 months time for something even more vile, let’s have a look at some interesting new functions that were added to the Big Blu F not so long ago.
Lists. At first I have to admit, I thought they were at best pointless and at worst a major pain in he arse of my OCD. Yes, once you have lists, you have not just 1 unread posts counter but at least half a dozen. And just because you’ve seen a post in one, doesn’t mean it’s marked as read in the other lists. Incredibly annoying.
But hey, OCD aside, I have actually found a rather neat use from them. I know, I shouldn’t jinx it, the second Facebook realises something in the interface is useful it’s doomed. But what the hell.
Now I don’t know about you, but I have friends all over the place, and from all over the place. And they speak different languages. Well, they don’t all speak a different language, that would be unmanageababel. Most of them speak either English, French or both. The French-speakers of course moaned copiously when I posted things in English and the English-speakers… Well, they just stoically ignored anything posted in French.
That’s when I realised that lists work both ways: they can be used to sort the content you see, but they can also be used to restrict what you post. So I created 2 lists: French and English, and I sorted my friends out into one or the other, or both. When I set up my language lists, I posted one last post in English on the French list and in French on the English list, asking anyone who could understand it and who didn’t want to see posts in the other language to let me know so I could remove them accordingly.
So now, all I have to do is select which list to post to when writing my post, and voila! People who aren’t in the list won’t see what you post in it, all neat and tidy!
Of course, the same can be applied to other groups, rather than spamming everyone with endless posts about your favourite sport/music/games/pet/baby, why not set up separate lists? Or if you don’t want your work colleagues to see those photos, set them up as a list apart.
